Hannah Winterbourne, 27, was born a boy and spent time in the Army as a man (top left) before deciding while on a tour of duty at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan that she wanted to undergo a sex-change operation and become a woman. The captain in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers began living as a woman (centre and bottom left) after returning to a new post at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire. She is now a a year from the full transformation (right) after beginning hormone therapy, having some surgery and her beard removed.
