Govt caps price of Remdesivir: Health minister Harsh Vardhan

 

The Central government has capped the price of Remdesivir. The decision was taken in reference to the ongoing efforts for enhancement of availability and affordability of Remdesivir injection. After government intervention, major manufacturers, marketers of Remdesivir injection voluntarily reduced the maximum retail price (MRP).

Increasing supply of oxygen cylinders and Remdesivir in hospitals, adding ventilator stocks and enhanced supply of vaccine doses were issues raised by 11 states and union territories at a meeting convened by the Centre on Saturday, amid a spurt in coronavirus cases.

The high-level meeting was chaired by Union health minister Harsh Vardhan with the health ministers of 11 states and union territories to review measures taken by them for prevention, containment and management of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

The states, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, have been reporting an unprecedented surge in new COVID cases.

In a statement, the health ministry said issues pertaining to augmenting the supply of oxygen cylinders, stepping up supply of Remdesivir in hospitals, adding to the ventilator stock, and enhanced supply of vaccine doses were raised by almost all the 11 states that participated in the meeting.

India's Muslims feel targeted by rumors they're spreading Covid-19












New Delhi Hafiz Mohammed Naseerudin says that after a police officer assaulted him for being a Muslim and blamed him for spreading the coronavirus, he was left lying on the road for almost an hour.
Naseerudin, 44, had gone to pick up some vegetables from his friend's house in Humnabad, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, when he says an officer stopped him on his scooter.
Other vehicles were on the road, Naseerudin says -- he believes he was stopped because of his religion.
    "I am an Imam, so I look and dress very Muslim. I also have a long beard," he says. "The cop started hitting me and saying that it is because of me and my community that this disease is spreading."
    Nagesh D L, police superintendent of Bidar district where Humnabad is located, says the officer has been suspended while an inquiry was conducted into the incident. Naseerudin says he called the police from hospital to make a statement, but Nagesh claims they did not receive any complaint.

    Naseerudin is not alone. As fears of a widespread coronavirus outbreak mount in India, some of the country's Muslims, who make up roughly 200 million of the country's 1.3 billion population, have been targeted in Islamophobic attacks on the streets and online, and accused of spreading the virus.
    In the capital, New Delhi, for example, volunteers distributing ration kits to Muslim families say they face harassment from police and are scared to go out. In Punjab, Muslim milk producers say they have been threatened by villagers, their houses have been raided by police, and people are scared to buy their produce.
    At the center of the recent Islamophobia is a gathering of a conservative Muslim missionary group in New Delhi in mid-March, and led to a large, highly publicized cluster of coronavirus cases.
    While these incidents have been mostly isolated, the virus fears are only amplifying existing prejudices, playing into growing Hindu nationalism which in recent years has seen India's Muslim societies increasingly marginalized.

    BBC broadcasts Muslim prayers on radio for the first time










    Muslims in the UK can now listen to Friday prayers broadcast on BBC radio for the first time.
    Different imams lead the 5:50 a.m. broadcasts every week on 14 BBC local radio stations, reciting verses from the Qur’an or quotes from Prophet Muhammad, before delivering sermons and leading listeners in prayer.
    The stations’ audiences are in parts of Britain with large Muslim communities — Leeds, Sheffield, Lancashire, Manchester, the West Midlands, Leicester, Stoke, Derby, Nottingham, Coventry and Warwickshire, the Three Counties, Merseyside, Berkshire and London.
    “Local radio is all about connecting communities, and we hope these weekly reflections will go some way to helping Muslims feel a sense of community while they are isolating,” said Chris Burns, the head of BBC Local Radio.
    Places of worship throughout Britain have been closed since March 23 in one of the measures introduced to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The BBC already broadcasts Christian services on Sundays on 39 of its local and national stations.
    The Friday prayer broadcasts, which began last Friday, will continue for as long as Muslims are unable to attend their local mosques. There are also plans for regular broadcasts for other religious minorities, such as the Hindu and Jewish communities, the BBC said.
    In a TV broadcast to the British people on Sunday, Queen Elizabeth praised people of “all faiths” for their combined efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

    Many people have started donating money to various charities and also to government funds for research in order to stop the spread of the virus. Vedanta's Anil Agarwal has pledged Rs 100 crore, while many MPs have pledged their MPLAD funds.
    On Friday morning, however, social media websites and chat applications were abuzz with reports that Wipro Chairman & promoter Azim Premji had donated Rs 50,000 crore - an almighty sum - to charity to help purchase equipment required to fight coronavirus.
    However, these reports are incorrect and seem to have been confused with another donation of Premji which took place around the same time last year. In 2019, Premji had kept aside 34% of this stake in the firm, amounting to Rs 52,000 crore for his foundation involved in philanthropy. In a statement to a news channel, Wipro clarified that the announcement of donation was made in March 2019 and not this week.

    India’s 1st Corona images show it’s round with cobbled surface



















    NEW DELHI: India’s first images of the SARS-CoV2 under a microscope are in — it’s round like other coronaviruses, about 70 to 80 nanometre (a human hair is about 80,000 nanometre) and has a cobbled surface structure.
    The findings have been published in the ‘Indian Journal of Medical Sciences’ based on a report by the National Institute of Virology in Pune, the nodal testing centre for Covid-19 in India.
    The specimen for these images were taken from the throat swab of a woman in Kerala, India’s first confirmed Covid-19 case. “A total of seven negative stained virus particles having morphodiagnostic features of a coronavirus-like particle could be imaged in the fields scanned,” the paper has said. “One particular virus particle was very well preserved.”
    Studying the structure is crucial to understanding the origin and, eventually, develop vaccines to counter it. In the long run, it also helps understand its evolutionary relationship with other viruses. In this sample, two structural features specific to the novel coronavirus were observed...

    'Fate of the Furious' on pace for record global opening weekend




    The eighth installment in the "Fast and the Furious" is on the path to becoming the biggest worldwide debut of all time, besting both "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Jurassic World."
    Universal Pictures on Sunday estimated that "The Fate of the Furious" would earn a record $532.5 million worldwide over the holiday weekend, thanks to a particularly robust showing in 63 territories, including China.
    If the figures hold, it will just inch past the previous record holder, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" which launched to $529 million in December of 2015 without China.
    The film broke the record for biggest international weekend ever, with $432.3 million. The previous record holder was "Jurassic World" with $316.7 million.
    "There is no market that hasn't had a strong reception," said Duncan Clark, Universal's president of international distribution. "Whatever culture, whatever language, whatever country, we seem to have found a home."
    The China opening alone brought in a record $190 million followed by $17.8 million from Mexico and $17 million from the U.K. and Ireland.
    An estimated $100.2 million of the global total comes from 4,310 North American theaters — a second best for the franchise and enough to easily top the domestic charts, but well below the $147.2 million opening of "Furious 7" in 2015.
