Robin Thicke Crowned Sexist of the Year Following 'Blurred Lines' Controversy
The 36-year-old smashed records around the world with the single which features Pharrell Williams and T.I. but he really drew attention when he released the accompanying video which sees the three lotharios enjoying a host of naked women cavorting around them. It's not only the video which has caused outrage but also the suggestive lyrics which have been accused of objectifying women sexually, and it has even been banned by more than 20 university campuses around the UK.
With all the controversy it has stirred up, it's hardly surprising that 'Blurred Lines' has earned Robin the Sexist of the Year title from a poll conducted by the End Violence Against Women Coalition which is comprised of more than 60 women's rights groups.
Group member Sarah Green said according to The Guardian: “Our heartfelt congratulations to a worthy winner Robin Thicke for both his concerted sexist efforts, and in the end the platform he created for rejection of the use of women as objects to promote mediocre pop... Sexism might be de rigeur for some music industry 'creatives' but the times they are a-changin.'”
The coalition also stated that they would be giving Robin a voucher so that he could download Aretha Franklin's female empowerment anthem 'Respect.'
Last month, Robin defended his hit single for the umpteenth time in the midst of the backlash saying that youngsters most likely understand the concept of the track more than adults, while also admitting that he wrote it for his wife, Paula Patton.
“I don't think people got it out here in the UK in those positions of power. I think the kids get it. I just have to deal with that. I wrote it about my wife. She's my good girl. And I know she wants it because we've been together for 20 years so I can vouch for that,” Robin told BBC News.
