Diverted plane chartered by U.S. military lands in Dubai

An airplane chartered by the United States military landed in Dubai early on Saturday morning after having spent several hours on the ground in Iran.
U.S. officials denied reports that the plane had been forced down by Iranian military aircraft, as initially reported, saying it had landed to refuel after being told that it could not overfly Iran due to a problem with the flight plan it had filled out in Afghanistan, its starting point.
The Dubai-based aircraft with some 100 Americans on board, was flying from the United States airbase at Bagram in Afghanistan to Dubai.
"A Fly Dubai charter plane flying from Bagram Air Field to Dubai was re-routed to Bandar Abbas, Iran because of a bureaucratic issue today," a U.S. State Department official said.
"Contrary to press reports, this plane was not forced down by the Iranian military," the official added. "The issue appears to have been resolved and hopefully the plane will be able to take off soon."
Earlier, the Washington Post reported that Iranian fighter jets had forced a plane carrying about 100 Americans, and possibly two Canadians to land in Iran. It said the plane was chartered by the Pentagon from Fly Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
